Short version: Arioso has no account, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. It runs on your Mac. The only thing that leaves your Mac is the song you're playing (title and artist), sent to our lyrics provider so it can return that song's lyrics. The direct-download version also asks this website, once a day, whether a newer version is out.
What Arioso reads on your Mac
With your permission (macOS asks the first time), Arioso reads the song currently playing in Spotify or Apple Music: title, artist, album, length, playback position and album artwork. It uses this to show the matching lyrics. When you press a button on Arioso's player (play or pause, previous, next, shuffle, repeat, or a tap on the progress bar), it sends that one command to the same app. It never changes playback on its own and never opens a music app on its own. You can withdraw access at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Automation.
Live waves (optional). On macOS 14.2 or later, with your permission (macOS asks the first time), Arioso can measure how loud Spotify's or Apple Music's audio is, in a few frequency bands, so the waves on its player move with the music. It listens only to that one app, only while a song is playing, and only in memory: each moment of audio is reduced to a few numbers and discarded. Arioso never records, saves or sends any audio. You can turn this off in Settings › Player › Follow the music, or withdraw permission in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording.
What is sent over the internet
- To Musixmatch, our licensed lyrics provider: the song's title, artist and length, to find its lyrics. When lyrics are shown, Arioso also loads a small reporting link Musixmatch requires under its licence, so artists and songwriters are paid. See Musixmatch's privacy policy.
- To Spotify's image servers: requests for the album cover of the Spotify song you're playing.
- To this website (direct-download version only): once a day, Arioso downloads a small file that lists the latest version, so it can tell you when an update is ready. The request carries the version of Arioso you have and, like any web request, your IP address is visible to the site's host. You can turn it off in Settings › About.
These requests aren't linked to you: Arioso sends no name, email, account or device identifier.
What is stored, and where
Everything stays on your Mac, inside Arioso's own sandboxed folder: your settings, widget positions, your Recently Played list (with each song's Spotify link or Apple Music ID, so you can play it again with a click) and cached album covers. Lyrics are kept in memory only while the app is running. Deleting Arioso deletes all of it.
What Arioso never collects
- No account, sign-in or email
- No analytics, crash reporting or advertising
- No location, contacts, files, microphone or camera
- No recordings of any audio: the live waves measure loudness and keep nothing
- Nothing is sold or shared with anyone for marketing
Children
Arioso doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children.
